Milk Journey: The Final Stage

Can I just take a moment and celebrate the fact that I successfully completed my goal of breastfeeding for 1 year! As a working mama who worries a lot, I didn’t think it was possible. But here I am, writing about the process of weaning. Okay, moment over. Time to discuss the final stage of this breastfeeding journey. Weaning.

My goal is to slowly stop breastfeeding around 2 months post his birthday. The first thing to change is how much I pump when I’m away. So, I started cutting back on my work pumping (hooray!). Currently, I’m only bringing home 1 ounce. It only took my body 3 weeks to stop making a lot of milk during the day. The body is an amazing thing.

I’m about 1 month into weaning and, Benji nurses 1 or 2 times day. His never missed session is right after he wakes up. He also nurses at night once in a while.

This whole journey has been a process to say the least. I am so thankful that Benji is leading the way. In the first few weeks of weaning, it was really hard to change my mindset about how to care for him. It’s okay to not offer him milk and it’s okay that he doesn’t want it (deep breaths).

My favorite thing about being a mama is watching him grow. I’m so in awe of his ability to learn new things so quickly. He will become more independent. And that’s a good thing.
